UHV is among the best values in the state – ranking the sixth most affordable public university, according to Texas Higher Education Coordination Board data. In fact, based on the cost of 12 semester credit hours in 2008, students saved $3,000 by taking classes at UHV instead of another state university.
Despite this fact, we know that many of the new freshmen and sophomores we aim to recruit from outside our region for the fall of 2010 will need scholarships to support their dreams of higher education.
This is why I am so grateful to our community supporters who have taken up the challenge to raise $250,000 annually during the next five years so that we can attract new students to our community. Campaign Victoria seeks an ambitious amount of money to support these scholarships, but the difference it will make in our community is profound. Everyone here agrees that Victoria has a kind of unusual “demographic” with too few young professionals in the middle.
The idea to start the scholarship fund emerged from the work of the Commission on Expanding Access to Higher Education, made up of community and education leaders. The commission recommended that UHV expand and wanted to help ensure the university’s success.
We call this effort Campaign Victoria and NOT Campaign UHV for a reason. The mission is to attract NEW talent, new students to our region. In the short term, these students will be new customers for many businesses, and some will blend into the service workforce. Couldn’t we use some energetic young workers in our restaurants, for instance? But more importantly, in the long run, statistics indicate and logic dictates that many of them will settle in our region and remain here as professionals building careers and lives.
Making Victoria and UHV a true destination for the next generation of students is a campaign worth waging. Please join me.
