Sitting in the take-out lane at Whataburger yesterday I saw a big sign in the window that read "one nation then in bigger red letters UNDER GOD then indivisible. It reminded me that I am old enough to have recited the pledge without the phrase "under god" in it. It was added in 1954 at the urging of the Knights of Columbus. It may have made them happy but it ruined a great story about the little boy who wondered who the "one naked individual" was in the pledge. Hadn't thought about it in years.
