From an AP article:
"The board voted 5-4 after parents and community leaders made final pleas to spare the schools even as the beleaguered district seeks to erase a projected $50 million budget shortfall. The approved plan calls for shuttering 29 of 61 schools — a striking amount even as public school closures rise nationwide while the recession eats away at academic budgets."
Teachers, nation-wide, favored Barak Obama. Once elected he looted a number of teacher retirement funds in the purchase...uh...er hostile takeover of GM and Chrysler in favor of the auto worker's union.
Now we see school budgets all over this country lapsing into bankruptcy. NEISD in San Antonio is laying off teachers and school workers.

Coolgranny..."A law must be passed that forces all of Congress to be included in these hair-brained ideas."
Yer preachin' to the choir, but it ain't gonna happen. While I'd LOVE to see the law you propose pass, remember who it is that passes those laws -- that's right; Congress, the authors of the very hair-brained ideas that cause us so much grief. No way are they gonna cut their own throats. The ONLY way to get the attention of congress critters is to fire them on election day. The entire House and a third of the Senate will be up for re-election (except for those that have resigned in scandal) this year. If 50 or so in the House and a dozen or so in the Senate were to be fired by their bosses (we voters), I think that would get their attention. However, I don't think it'll happen.
March 12, 2010 at 9:05 a.m.Kenneth, don't know who your teacher friends are, but I run in totally different circles.
March 12, 2010 at 7:21 a.m.Code, it hasn't been that long ago when the amnesty for illegals issues were being discussed openly. Keep up. The lastest is the national identification card with our DNA embedded no less. How about the government just mailing our current SS identification, plastic coated ones that won't deteriorate in our wallets. That would catch the count up for a moment or two. Anyone caught with someone elses goes to directly to jail without passing go. The form to fill out could include a spot for a thumbprint. I'm not pricking my finger for anyone except the lab techs. Confidentiality and all that.
March 12, 2010 at 7:19 a.m.Hasn't the fight over healthcare proven anything? The President doesn't always get what the President wants. This is going to be another big fight and it is not a done deal, so lets not get ahead of what is actually happening right now.
March 11, 2010 at 9:13 p.m."OK, I'll bite, you tell me what BO has done or is doing to give illegals the vote? Name me ONE single action attributable to the President that indicts him."
From Breitbart: "Obama campaigned on a promise to push a plan to offer legal status to 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States following several failed attempts by his predecessor George W. Bush to enact reform."
"Reform activists emerged from a meeting with US President Barack Obama Thursday convinced that he could enact sweeping immigration reform this year, despite a toxic political environment"
"Obama said in a statement after the meeting that he was pleased to learn of progress wrought by the two senators on the issue, but did not offer a timetable for action."
"I told both the senators and the community leaders that my commitment to comprehensive immigration reform is unwavering, and that I will continue to be their partner in this important effort," Obama said.
Unfortunately, BO won't be indicted, but he's trying to change the status of illegals and they will be able to vote. I would expect every one of them to vote for BO. It's a blatent push for votes. It's as blatent as offering an administration position to someone to keep him from running against a Senator. It's as blatent as nominating the brother of an undecided congress critter a federal judgeship so the congress critter will vote for his health reform package.
March 11, 2010 at 9:04 p.m.observer It is about time the US Chamber of Commerce is making itself heard. Trust me, some insurance company in this country would have won big time if the bill passed. Looks like it is going down the tube anyway, and that is a good thing. I disagree about Congress reaping what they sow. I think we would have more honest politicians and government of the people and for the people might actually become the norm. Liars get away with only so much.
March 11, 2010 at 8:54 p.m.Code Hate to burst your bubble, but I lived in a Communist country. The oppression and control of the people through ignorance and poverty was and is still the saddest of all human conditions.
@thewaywardwind: OK, I'll bite, you tell me what BO has done or is doing to give illegals the vote? Name me ONE single action attributable to the President that indicts him.
March 11, 2010 at 2:08 p.m.code...Koolaid is nowhere near as intoxicating as what you're smoking, injesting, injecting or drinking if you think the democrats under BO aren't working very hard to give illegals the vote.
March 11, 2010 at 1:59 p.m.Ha! Communist? You live in the most prosperous, powerful and free country in the world. Have you been to China or experienced life in Russia or North Korea? Ladies and Gentlemen, put down the Kool Aid, switch off Hannity and Beck and pause to think.
"A law must be passed that forces all of Congress to be included in these hair-brained ideas". If we did that do you think ANY legislature would pass? No and this country would never get anything done.
"I imagine that any perosn in the country illegally WILL be able to vote" - again Kool Aid must be making a fortune in Victoria, I cannot add anything to this statement that could serve to lessen the stupidity of such a claim.
So much bunkum on one web page!
March 11, 2010 at 1:02 p.m.coolgranny..."He's gone in 4 years"
I hope you're right, but don't count on it. He and his cronies are working hard to buy votes from all sorts of people who shouldn't be voting at all. By the time the next presidential election rolls around, I imagine that any perosn in the country illegally WILL be able to vote -- and those votes will go to the democrats. BO is working to split the country along citizen vs illegal resident lines.
March 11, 2010 at 12:27 p.m.Good post, Kenneth. coolgranny, while I agree with most of your post, I must take exception to your comment that Socialized Medicine "...is just another big business idea." Nothing could be farther from the truth. The US Chamber of Commerce has been adamantly and actively opposed to Obamacare from the beginning. Some large businesses and the health insurance industry, while initially neutral on the idea, have now stopped drinking the KoolAid are are in active opposition. This occurred as soon as it dawned on them that Obama had been lying to them to buy their silence and had no intention of following through on his promises. Maybe they finally remembered Vladimir Lenin's statement that "The Capitalists will sell us the rope we will use to hang them."
March 11, 2010 at 12:02 p.m.Another comment about the changes. This health care issue is just another big business idea. Somebody's hand is definitely in the cookie jar. If not, then the plan would deal with the issue of only the uninsured. My and millions of other people's insurance needs are met perfectly well through big business. Yes, there are millions who need free clinics. This would cost the tax payer pennies instead of thousands, and wouldn't jeopardize the unborns' tax burden. Those who have already paid for social security and medicare will be the ones who get totally screwed if this government is allowed to continue the course. Tax paying citizens have already paid for their benefits under the blindfold that the government can save better than the individual can. OK then, where is my money and my husband's money? I want a refund with interest.
March 11, 2010 at 10:18 a.m.A law must be passed that forces all of Congress to be included in these hair-brained ideas. I guarantee that Congress would be the most conservative spending machine around if they had to suffer the consequences of this fiasco of the current leadership??!
Reality check here, Kenneth. Whenever the actions of the government affect industry, the tax base goes to hell in a hand basket, and schools suffer. Property taxes will never be able to match industrial taxes even with all of the tax breaks. It's the upside down pyramid again. This teacher and her friends never supported Obama and saw him as the communist he and his cronies are. Communists want their masses ignorant and without choices. He's gone in 4 years.
