After my husband and I spent six days in Cancun it's hard to come home and not have a buffet of fresh fruit, pico, guacamole, and other wonderful foods greeting us each morning or each meal. It is so hard to get back into the swing of home life and back into SCHOOL. Now that the pool is opening up it feels like summer! It feels like summer most of the time here in Victoria, but I mean it already feels like we should be on our summer break. You know, the pencils feel like they weigh 20 lbs and all of our workbooks are hidden at the bottom of toy boxes.
Which makes me wonder, "Why the heck is LBS used to abbreviate POUNDS? There's no B or L in the word POUND!?" I think I've asked this before on the homeschool discussion group, but I already forgot the answer. I just googled "lbs. pounds" and found this: The word pound comes from the Latin word pendere, meaning "to weigh". The Latin word libra means "scales, balances" and it also describes a Roman unit of mass similar to a pound. This is the origin of the abbreviation "lb" for the pound. (From Wikipedia)
My teen is almost finished with all of his courses but my younger two will be doing some school off and on during the summer. I guess going to the pool will be incentive to get some learning in....
I think I would rather take more breaks throughout the year so that we never feel rushed rather than have one big summer off. My teen would rather push himself and free up the summer.
We never are "off" are we? There is always something to learn!
What are the pros and cons of a traditional or a year-round schedule? Which would you prefer?

Traditional. We use to start the day after Labor day, , 2 weeks off for Christmas, 4 day weekend for Thanksgiving and Easter and were out before Memorial Day. I remember I always listened to the Indy 500 at my aunts house in MS. Had no spring break until you went to college, though I did not go right away after high school, and still did ALOT of work. Some in service days. 6 period days.
May 27, 2008 at 6:12 a.m.By my junior year I was getting tired of school. But that was me and a few of my friends. I think I would have gone crazy without the long break. I don't see anything wrong with the schedule we use to do. Of course we did not have all the computer games and junk all night TV they have nowadays. We had no AC at home so it was get your rear outside, do things, build things, learn things, etc..
I know with my kids they ran a short summer some of it and from what I saw they were not any different in learning at the start of the year than I was.
Traditional. Kids should have the summer to find out there's more to life than going to school.
May 26, 2008 at 9:38 p.m.I prefer the year round school. When I was little and had almost three months of summer break I'd attend to forget some things that I learned and had to be refreshened when I began the next school year.JMO
