I never paid attention back when I was a "Wee-Beck" in school so when my children learn something new in our home-school it's usually new to me too. That may sound terrible for a "homeschool mom" to admit but the truth is I do more learning WITH my children than I do TEACHING at them.

Anyway, I was thinking more about math today and remembered something cool that my daughter had learned in one of her math courses and I had to share with you guys. It's called the "lattice method of multiplication" and it's an alternative way to solve multiplication problems.

Have you ever heard of it? I tried to impress the other homeschool moms with my new found trick but some were already familiar with it. Maybe they used the same course in their home as we used with my daughter.*

Here is a link to a video explanation of the lattice method over on Teacher Tube: Teacher Tube Videos - The Lattice Method of Multiplication.

Check it out and try it with your children. Tell me what they think. My daughter liked it for awhile but switched back to the traditional method.

I wish I would have known about this back when I was in school struggling with mathematics. It could have at least changed things up a bit. And I was the type of learner who got very bored very fast.

*We learned this while watching the Basic Math course from The Teaching Company.
