Well, it’s my birthday today. I won’t tell you how old I am but I will share with you my eight year old’s guess. He guessed that I was fifty. When he saw the shocked look on my face he recanted and changed his answer to forty-nine. That’s fine. Little did he know that he had just participated in a veiled math lesson – guesstimation. If I were the type of teacher that believed in the traditional grading scale I would have given him a grade to equal his guess.
I woke up yesterday, pondered my entry into maturity, put my hair in pig tails, and took a picture of myself in the mirror like I was some teen posing for a MySpace photo. After hundreds of shots I found one grainy enough that I actually felt comfortable enough to share.
When I am happy with a picture of myself it usually means that the picture looks nothing like me. Here it is:
I like that image because it hides my crows feet, blemishes, blotchy skin tone, and probably some "sleep" in my eyes...
If my eight year old fails he’s taking me down with him because I can’t do any better. I tweeted the above picture with the comment, “I’m gonna be the most mature forty year old ever!” I thought I would enter into the world of forties with humor. It took twelve minutes for me to catch my mistake. I wasn’t turning forty...just thirty-nine.
My birthday gift to me? I’m one year younger than I thought I was.
Who can top that?
I can.
Because I’ve thought I was turning forty for two years now.
P.S. You guys know how "ding dong" I am so let this picture come to your mind whenever you allow yourself to be insulted by anything I ever say here on this forum. Let this photo help you "consider the source."

Happy Belated Birthday my friend! You wear it well!
November 3, 2009 at 7:52 a.m.By that pic I'd have to say 29!
Take good care of yourself because once you get into the forties next year (or the next?), you will start to really feel how much life has been beating your bones.
The best part of your post is, besides the pic, the humor it has brought to my tuesday morning. Thanks for the all day smile!
You must surly wake up every day with a fresh young mind.
Where .jpg quality and lighting are extremely low - I am aging well. ;)
November 2, 2009 at 3:36 p.m.40?
You age a lot better than I. ;)
November 2, 2009 at 1:32 p.m.Actually, my list isn't NEAR that long. You are one amazing lady!!
November 2, 2009 at 10:04 a.m.Almost forgot-I am going to start subtracting years......
November 2, 2009 at 9:45 a.m.What a fuzzy QT U R. When I turn 60 next year, that's the kind of pic I will post. At least it's hiding the tiny crow's feet instead of major wrinkles. Even a fuzzy one of me would have to be done by a professional. 39 was one of my favorite years-toddler-stay at home mom-working on my masters-bible study-training in California-breakfast with BFF-mom's day out-water color classes-beach every warm day with my baby boy-kite flying videos with the older son-and surf mom with older son and his friends. Thanks for reminding me about how great life was and is-now you make your list. Yours is probably a lot longer than mine. Happy Birthday ;)
