July 24 is celebrated by a segment of the homeschool community as “Learn Nothing Day.”
If you lean more to the John Holt, Sandra Dodd, Wendy Priesnitz side of the spectrum you understand what a challenge today might bring. You also believe that humans are thinkers and that we are always learning and you are glad to finally enjoy a break.
I had already failed by the time I was reminded of this important date. I had memorized a few les couleurs and reviewed some French phrases, but maybe I didn’t actually learn? After all, I haven’t been able to function in French and I’ve forgotten most of what I've memorized, therefore I haven’t learned, right?
Darn! I realized today why Bleu Edmondson is not Blue Edmondson.
When I announced to my eight year old that today was Learn Nothing Day he complained that he wanted to read Calvin and Hobbs. I asked him, “You think you learn something while reading Calvin and Hobbs?” and he answered, “Yes. You learn when you read.”
I’ve read somewhere – oh god – that we learn as we dream. So I guess it could be argued that we learn in our sleep.
So, now you understand the challenge.
Even if you celebrated this day by floating down the river your mind might wander to some old dormant puzzle piece and connect it with a new piece and without your consent you may solve, discover, or learn. (Jose did it better.)
How to “learn nothing?”

Nice piece, and thank you! I want to credit my daughter, Holly, for the pretty parts of the logo. I did the outline, but she knew how to put the images in. Each image has an unschooling story, and several have to do with conferences or art made by several people.

When we rise in the morning, having slipped thru the hallowed halls of lucidity, the most difficult task will always be to not learn anything during the day. You see, the synapses in our minds that were blazing with chemical messages while we were lucid tug at the opposite extremes of our sentience. Before they finally lapse into semi-dormancy dreams and reality find common ground. We have by then 'learned' something though we have not made the concious connection just yet.
I have found that existence itself is a never ending learning expierence. July 24 is a worthy challenge indeed!
