My wife started on a diet using "myfitnesspal.com." She even got me on it. Losing weight is about three things....calories, calories and calories. You can eat what you want as long as you stay below your calorie count. I now weigh what I did in high school, I couldn't believe it and my wife is not far behind.
The downside is you have to faithfully record what you eat, but it's pretty easy their data base has all the calorie counts for everything edible it seems - the upside is I rarely felt hungry and you don't have to eat bananas and chocolate milk, etc. But the more you exercise the faster you lose, they also compute how much credit in calories you get for the exercise - in a word get a bike it will rip the pounds off.
And one last item, yogurt also seems to help losing weight, especially for older people. A university study found that it also works on mice and rats - for what that's worth.
