Hey Advocate Readers,
I'm the education reporter at the Advocate, and we're starting up a new series regarding the 2 new high schools opening up in fall 2010.
This-coming year will be an exciting time for VISD as we see how the school district divides up the teachers, decides which programs the schools will have and what features the East and West high schools will have. Then there's the Advanced Learning Center and the Natatorium.
I'll be meeting with the Victoria school district from time to time for interviews. I'd like to open this up to you guys. What questions do you have about the new schools? I will try to get those answers as I find out more information about them.
Post a comment, e-mail me at jcavazos@vicad.com, or call me at 580-6535. Thanks.

print the VISD Budget!
What is spent on Athletics and on Football?
What monies do the JrHi get, if any?
How much goes to travel? Since some some extra-cir teams pay ahold lot more % wise
How many athletes are suppose to be in a program with assigned coaches?
What was the balance of the General Fund the last few years? Since it seems funds are transferred there regularly. This mainly pretains to athletics for now.....
As for this year, as I have stated before---who is watching the spending??? As long as AD is under budget he (dept.)can spend freely. I am sure others have info better than I do.
December 27, 2009 at 10:19 a.m.Children,
It is my understanding students will be allowed to wear any type of school spirit shirt, not just the new ones with the new logos.
Thanks for all of your input. I will do my best to find the answers to these questions.
December 11, 2009 at 11:03 a.m.children, the drill team needs a sponsor (employee) first. the new arts director I belive prefers a cheerleader/spirit/pep squad first. to add all officers but 1 is going west. why they trying to get her to move???
school spirit shirts will be allowed if deemed appropiate by principal/designatee. remember each hs will have an assistant super. attached to it.
as for poor ratings, that issue is probably resolved new school opens. i cant remember all the clause but the accoutability kinda in a way starts over. Currently PW has kids in Crain and Howell due to this issue. But for atheltics you better know your rules. People in town are educated due to all the select ball playing. Our coaches need to go to inservices for just this issue.
i will be mad as heck if my HS gets losing coaches and/or "banker/nurses" teachers and the other HS gets top notch experienced educators.
gang colors will not be an issue.
i hope they use books instead of copy paper!! kiddos come home w/ tons of copy paper homework. never use the books I am told. this is multiple classes. why?!?
December 11, 2009 at 10:57 a.m.lol...do you really think they are not going to have a drill team next year??
December 11, 2009 at 9:57 a.m."Gangs" Sounds like a good topic to get started with the new schools opening. I hope there will be Zero Tolerence with any type of "gang" behavior. If the student isn't at School to learn they shouldn't be at the School.
December 11, 2009 at 9:50 a.m.I've heard rumor that there isn't going to be a drill team next year. Can you find out and put it in your report?? There was also the concern that cheerleaders won't be able to go to the Nationals every year because of the split???
Will students be able to wear their Memorial spirit shirts as part of the dress code?? It is a little rediculous for Seniors to purchase a bunch of new spirit shirts their last year??
Solid colored polos might contribute to our gang problems. They might choose a color for their gang and wear their colors daily?? Something to consider...
Are students going to be able to choose which campus they attend since the district is rated unacceptable?
I'm glad you are writing the article, so parents and students can be informed.
December 11, 2009 at 9:41 a.m.Who gets the VICTORIADORES lol
December 8, 2009 at 1:37 p.m.From what I have gathered, both schools will in fact offer the same cirriculum and course study. If there is to be a course/program at one but not the other, then the central campus(current senior campus) will host students from both schools via busing to not have the favorite towards one verses the other...
December 8, 2009 at 7:54 a.m.Julian, I hope that the schools will have the EXACT same programs.Otherwise, won't it be another situation where people will think one school is getting the better stuff? Hopefully, each school will be able to offer its students the same things equally.
