The Crossroads is a pretty diverse place, maybe more than you'd think.
I'm the diversity reporter at the Advocate, which means I get the wonderful privilege of writing stories about minorities of any kind - Hispanics, Blacks, Asians, Middle Easterners, youth, musicians, the mentally or physically challenged, smaller religious groups, homosexuals....etc.
The list can go on. I'm looking for people, issues, or trends in specifically in the Crossroads dealing with diversity to write about. Know anyone in your communities?
E-mail me at jcavazos@vicad.com, or call me at 361-580-6535. I'd love to hear from you.

How about a story on people in the crossroad area that choose to live the Goth or Punk life style or something similar it can't be to easy for them around here. Victoria is not the easiest town to dare to be different in. Which I knew someone for you to talk to but alas I do not.
June 8, 2009 at 11:21 a.m.Julian, Welcome to Victoria! I hate prejudice of any kind! One of my favorite preachers on a radio station I frequent recently did a sermon against inter-racial marriage. I have never listened to him again. I hate prejudice! I fear though that I have a deep prejudice against...bigots!
June 8, 2009 at 10:17 a.m.As you drive in to Houston on the Katy Freeway there are a series of exits to the north off the freeway that will take you about ten city blocks to Longpoint Avenue which runs parallel to I-10. Along that street are numerous, huge flea markets and second hand stores and the international culture is rich! Rich! Korean, Vietnamese, Pakistani, Mexican and several Central American races. All kinds of different foods and smells and sights! It's a wonderful place to visit!
Y'all are awesome!
June 8, 2009 at 10:03 a.m.Josh,
You were not the only one who noticed that. I agree that addressing stereo-types is a worthy story.
So Hicktoria, out of how many cities bigger than Victoria in Texas and throughout the U.S., explain why you typed San Francsico.
June 8, 2009 at 5:18 a.m.Ok two things came to mind when I read your blog. I have seen very few if any at all (I can't remember but maybe one) story on the homeschool group here in Victoria. Homeschoolers and the parents are a great group to maybe interview. As far as middle eastern people. MAybe go and talk to the husband and wife that run the convience store at the corner of Miori LAne and Sam Houston. Great people. Fought very hard to get here in one piece and they are interesting and nice people. I chat with them all the time and make it a point to give them my business. Could be a great "coming to America" style piece. JMO
June 8, 2009 at 12:58 a.m.I can't believe that hicktoria can just comment something rude like that, based off of ignorant stereotypes... asking me so casually if I'm moving to SAN FRANCISCO. And It gets ignored!
If that's not effed up I don't know what is.... Maybe you should write about this in your story Julian, how socially diverse groups just can't seem to avoid the "stares", or the "whispers" or the stereotype-based questions or assumptions from the so called "true minorities" here in Victoria, aka "the white people"?
If that's not ridiculous I don't know what is. There's your story.
June 8, 2009 at 12:45 a.m.I'm certainly open to writing stories about white people as well, but the thing is is that most people who are in the Advocate stories are white.
I'm trying to diversify the coverage by writing about other ethnicities to make sure they all get some coverage.
June 8, 2009 at 12:35 a.m.By "Middle Easterner," I meant people from the Middle East: Saudi Arabia, Iran, Syria, Afghanistan, ....you know- Middle Easterners.
I wondered if anyone knew of any in the Crossroads. A story about their culture, heritage, and what brought them to the Crossroads could be interesting.

June 6, 2009 at 1:10 p.m.Also, exactly what is a "Middle Easterner?"
Sorry to harp, but I just noticed this blog.
Of course after seeing some of the comments that are frequently left up "desert rats," etc., it comes a no surprise.

June 6, 2009 at 11:58 a.m.Mom3 - That sounds like a good plan. Interview ALL of them. Hispanic is not a minority in Victoria anymore as far as I know. Could of been changed lately, but for now, whites are minority.
June 6, 2009 at 11:56 a.m.Why don't you write about some of the kids from the Class of 2004 who just started their 1st year of med school. Indian boy, a hispanic girl , a hispanic boy(my son) , a black boy ,and an oriental boy. Their 's a white boy also. I think that is a lot of kids that are going to be doctors and they all graduated together from MHS.
