Bad things happen to good people. Good things happen to bad people. Sad but true, both of these. I made the second one up just now. But it stands to reason why they are true. Our laws are written by persons educated to the point of tunnel vision. They are written for all of us from the loftiest to the commonest, but in a language few can understand. But of course we can have legalese translated with the aid of one of those educated, for a fee few can afford.

An interesting question comes to mind. What percentage of the total wealth in the world of crime is controlled by what percent of the criminals? Of course in the world of the law abiding a researcher can answer such a question about the law abiding with a little effort. I don’t think the criminal elements want to divulge their prosperity. For the law abiding, it’s the law.

The law abiding and the criminal often exist side by side in our society. Most often, one does not know the true nature of the other. Don’t forget to wave at your neighbor tomorrow morning as you retrieve your paper from the driveway. Keep your suspicions to yourself. They may or may not be eyeing your push-mower and weed-whacker.

Secrecy is a part of being a modern human. We keep certain personal things hidden away from the public and surely realize that most of the public keeps secrets away from us. Things run smoothly that way and that suits most people just fine. “I have nothing to hide!” is just false bravado in most cases. There is always something to hide, no matter who you are. The most general use of that statement is usually just after an accusation is leveled. Only the truly ignorant have nothing to hide.
