There appeared to be four small discs approaching from the east. In the distance we could see a lone humanoid standing atop each one. They came forth in a diamond formation and the two on the outer corners suddenly had long sticks in their hands. As they neared us the figure on the trailing corner was suddenly surrounded by shiny tubular boxes and flat bronze-like plates. That figure seemed to squat down a bit. The forward corners’ figure pulled a hand up to his face and held it there.
In the distance we could tell the discs were all flat on top. The edges curved down to a knife edge and there were multicolored lights pulsing all around the curved edges. As they got closer they gained a little extra altitude and we began to see several huge yet shallow cones on their lower surfaces. The areas between the circles were filled in with smaller circles, all of unknown purpose.
They rushed up Main Street and split quickly down four different avenues. As they shot around buildings and out of sight with great whooshes of air, there appeared to be crisp outlines of some invisible energy dome covering each figure. The wind died away into an eerie silence. Jaws were on the sidewalk. Eyes were locked onto the corners of buildings.
I turned to look back out of the horseshoe that was downtown and back at the distant mountains from which the strange visitors had come. A soft hiss started from what felt like the back side of my spine. It slowly got stronger and then began to break up into individual ‘tat-tat-tats’. The sound began to undulate and get louder. Plate glass was vibrating and people began to shake out of their trances.
The ground began to send up thin wisps of dust when a “Thomp! Thomp! Thomp!” started to sound out from everywhere. Then the wisps were pushed even higher and quickly began to disperse up between buildings as a shrill conglomeration of what sounded like pigs, cats, dogs, and whales all screaming and moaning together were added to the din. A banshee-like scream pierced thru and all four discs reappeared moving in from four side streets to circle the main square.
Clouds and beams of multi-colored lights bounced off of every glass wall in sight and filled the square with a storm of photonic exuberance. The discs darted around the four corners of the square as the figures atop them danced in tribal fashion to the music that was filling everyone’s ears. One figure, stick in hand, stopped above monument corner and laid into his weapon with wild abandon. Each of the other discs went quiet and slowly slid alongside. With high pitched screams and squeals traffic lights turned into clouds of powdered glass. I wondered what was keeping the reflective facades of the tall buildings from likewise transforming. All at once the other three joined in for a few bars and then with a massive, percussive stroke, they all fell silent. Only a slight feathery breeze was audible in the aftermath of such a sonic onslaught.
The sound of an inhaled breath heralded the outbreak of a group of words. They boomed around the square with their declaration. ”Who will welcome us to this world?” The echoes raced away towards the mountains. The city waited for them to bounce back.
