Disenchantment sneaks up on you like a gator in a glassy pond. You never hear or see it coming usually, but once it latches on you know it for what it is. It can take on many forms but you can rest assured that once it sets in its tenacity will be all too obvious. In this day and age progress has forced an incredible learning curve upon all aspects of society. Computer literacy is a necessary floodwater that flows freely from the realms of the elderly all the way to the youngest generations still in diapers. Information in many forms is readily available at our fingertips. With so much we have to take in, meanings can easily be lost. The true focus of any information can easily be misinterpreted, mislabeled, misfiled, misleading, or even just ‘missed’. Sometimes we just need to pull back and step off the highway.

The world will run ahead without us. Our contributions to society, if we chose to be contributors, will be thrown into the mill eventually. If what we have to give life is ‘missed’, so be it. Our ability to complain about it may be an almost exclusively human trait but it is an individual’s reserved freedom to do so. Listening to and acting upon such things are also freedoms we all enjoy here in America.

The recent and dismal voter turnout brings to light a disenchantment that is beginning to reach epic proportions in these rough economic times. People no longer maintain high regard for elected officials. Blame for one thing or another runs rampant and eventual disgust with the establishment is one place to target such public animosities. The governing entities that used to take care of the day to day operations required for the correct functioning of our society on the local, national, and international levels are falling into the distrust and disgust of the people. We are asked for our opinions on a wide variety of subjects and then little or none of our opinions actually seem to make it into policy. We get the feeling that we as constituents are being given a voice that is eventually ignored. I’m not ranting on all our leaders but the greater proportion of them seems to be taking this course. Settling for the ‘lesser of two evils’ is fast becoming a morsel we want to slough off our plates and feed to the dogs.

I stand guilty of not voting. Chastise away if you must. While you tongue-lash and pencil-whip, or key-punch me, you have let your focus fall away from the roots of all our problems. Even momentary lapses of attention can allow problems to get out of hand. To all you true voters I say; “My lack of a vote made counts as much as the vote that you make.” Change is something politicians should not have to trump about. Change will happen regardless of any grand plan. The political climate today is proof of that.

I can honestly say that I could care less about who runs things. The way things are run is more important than who is at the wheel. Lackluster as the situation may be, at least things are ‘running’. No one can satisfy everybody so some dissent will always occur. You may wish to label me apathetic but to the contrary, I scrutinize politics and leadership with a fine toothed comb. I keep my opinions as private as possible and stay as far outside of politics as I possibly can. I know how our leader’s actions affect us all as much as the next person. Nothing happens without a reason in the world of human affairs. My uncast vote remains so, for a reason.
