Sunday, June 5th was a good day to be in the studio. I had a basic arrangement track of rhythm guitar in place. I matched a click track to it and then proceeded to polish off the keeper rhythm guitars. Drums came next with six tracks mixed down in stereo to two. A scratch lead guitar came next with a scratch vocal. After the bass was laid down, I proceeded to do double tracked vocals.

The Marshall MXL-990 is a large diaphragm condenser microphone that I’ve found to complement my voice, on this new track anyway. The first one I had was defective but the sales staff at Guitar Center in Corpus Christi was most helpful in replacing it with one that works. Thanks guys! Awesome job!

After the lead takes I picked the best one and it was time for equalizing, effects, and mix down. By 8:00 or 9:00pm I had a mix to master. After that I burned a CDr with all the new songs and gave it a listen on a car stereo and a walkman. It might be a bit lower in volume than all the other songs but that can easily be fixed.

I have found that memorizing whatever techniques I’ve used on past songs is a moot point. Ignorance lets me leave the door to experimentation wide open. This propagates a different sound to each tune that I strive for. Never mind that my lead guitar tones and drums are usually my stock sounds. Post tracking processes mold each song as I go along.

I previewed the new tune to Glenda and she approved. As long as I can see her listen to a whole song without comment, noticing the expression on her face is priceless. “That’s good!” Getting that response from her emboldens and humbles me at the same time. Whether she knows it or not, she sets the bar for me and I don’t care how high it raises. She’s a muse in more ways than I can ever completely expound upon.
