The romantic heart is like a lump of coal. Any ‘collision’ can produce enough pressure and heat to turn it into a diamond. Two diamonds are far better than one but even a diamond paired with a piece of coal still shines. I have no idea where this train of thought is going but I am determined to see it thru.

Love has a way of changing people’s character. It’s not always for the best but then again change is inevitable. The worst cases of change occur when love is lost. PSTD can happen as a result. Personalities can be destroyed. Relationships with friends, family, and even enemies can be tossed up into turmoil.

The death of love can be as subtle as the breaking away of a dandelion seed, or as wrenching as a supernova. We can get away with most of our pride intact, or without the slightest semblance left over. We come with a box full of mental tools designed especially for repairs but there are never any instructions on how to use them. Everyone around us might throw advice our way like so much sand or so many mountains. Nothing usually fits the bill immediately.

We remember our first love even though it usually becomes the first ‘crack’ in our hearts. That first imperfection colors us for the rest of our lives. It sets the tone of our first endeavors towards ‘new’ love. First love can easily be the first glint of jade on our hearts. The future can be dimmed. The past always echoes somehow.

Love as a muse has a spectacular track record. Can you think of any form of art that has not been productive when the subject matter was love? Even science and religion have expounded upon the subject and disseminated volumes of data, stories, and advice.

Life imitates art. Art imitates life. Love imitates nothing and true love can never be ‘imitated’. Cold hearts can be warmed, and molten hearts can be chilled. Broken hearts can last forever even though the cracks can be made to fade. Reassembled, the pieces are still separate. The slightest jostle might produce pain, or pleasure. A hefty ‘heart-check’ will definitely rearrange things. Emotions put memories into perspective. The heart blasts the brain with emotions, reminding us that we are alive!

There is no cure for the romantic heart. I for one hope they never find one. Image
