When we stumble along the road of our lives and we feel there is no one there to catch us, when we see no safe place to land, when we clench our souls tightly in preparation for the inevitable impact, they are there.

When the bottom rung of the ladder we were once upon is hidden by the clouds and our arms are far too short to reach ‘that high’, they are there.

When everything we are trying to do whirlpools deeper into darkness, and all the sights and sounds around us are drowned out by the thoughts we are trying to organize to save ourselves, they are there.

When time switches character from “innocent reminder” in the background to “incessant banshee” in our face, they are there.

When faces, once friendly and eager to interact with us, become staunch and condescending, they are there.

When compassion from others is needed sorely but impossible to visualize as a possibility, they are there.

When hope has evaporated away into invisible wisps, even after we set the cork on ‘that’ bottle as deep into the neck as it would go, they are there.

When, and if, a glimmer of light ever appears to show us the way back, they are still there. They never truly leave us for they are angels, guardians, our chaperones, tasked by God with following us on our one-way journey. At times they lift not a finger, other times they intervene grandly. If we have a proper belief, we know well when and where they interfere. We know when to be thankful for their existence even though it’s far too easy to forget they are there.

We all eventually pass thru deep dark valleys, fall into bottomless pits, sink beneath the waves of the ocean of life, and drift out of normal synchronization with the rest of the world. We fight to return to normalcy. We usually fail and fall farther into darkness. In the aftermath, if you survive, to say “I saved myself”, is always a lie. “They”, were there, and still are. We accomplish nothing on our own.

When, and if, we re-emerge into the light, they are still there on duty. They nudge us on and inspire us to look back and deeply within. They are the stewards of our souls. They are angels. They are muses.
