A bold splash of color, a sudden explosion of sound, or an ethereal mental dawning of a twist in reality you never expected; such things can be awesome from the safety of a seat in an audience. In entertainment such boldness pulls you along a story line that you probably pay to experience. It might be from a couch in your living room, seat in a vehicle, bar stool, stadium, or even on a street corner. What makes us love spectacles is the way they are presented to us.

Every song is a spectacle. That’s the way I feel about it anyway. Over the course of my life I have enjoyed a lot of music. Each and every one of my favorite songs caught my ear at a time when I was either looking for it or it was the farthest thing from my mind. Anywhere along the lines of those two extremes is where I’ve found the music I love. I was always looking for the next great tune when I first discovered music and even now my mind is still in that focused rut. I like it that way!

In a perfect world all my favorite music artists would live forever. They’d give me an ever expanding trove of great songs to listen to. Each one would be like an earmark in a book. Each page a perfect fit for a moment somewhere along the line of my meager existence.

Life is not the perfection we sometimes wish it to be. My list of loved songs may be long but it will never be complete. I can say with conviction that I could easily build a list of songs that would aid me in survival if I were ever stranded on a desert island. But, if life ever gets that bad, live and unplugged may be the only thing left to enjoy.

As time goes on many artist tire of the business that music has become. Their creativity may or may not diminish but their love affair with fighting to be heard over all other music wanes away. I have a small list of artists that I have, and always will, consider great in their own right. They may not have achieved stellar status with the rest of the world but they will always be great to me.

“Lunatics On Parole” were an awesome hard rocking band fronted by the charismatic Kenny “The Gardener”. Kenny was a highly knowledgeable and politically outspoken individual. His songs were epitomes of political bombast that hit at the machines of politics like a sledge-hammer. His was one of those independent bands that really made excellent recordings and each tune packed a definite spectacular punch. If you’re looking for great metal that pulls no punches you should make LOP one of your ‘go to’ bands. With songs like “Dumbing Down America” and “Corporate Goosestep”, the statement is clear, to the point, and executed in a true hard rocking style. Either with or without the political leanings, Kenny and crew always got the senses flying!

As I get older the music I discover keeps getting better and better. As new bands rise to the top of my lists, older bands hold their own. I have a long list of artists that no longer produce material but what they did make stands the test of time for me. Some are well known. Some are not. All of them hit some proverbial nail on the head for me at some point in m life. To me they are all number one. Not all of my favorites get played on the radio but, as long as I have a CD, and a gadget to play it in, I’m happy. I’m not a big fan of MP3. I’d rather have a big set of headphones on or be standing in front of a large set of speakers. The air moved by those devices feels far much better than the screams of mosquito sized transducers that collect earwax.
