“Here’s a fitting tune for that long cruise thru the middle of nowhere!”

I snapped awake suddenly as the radio burst to life. My heart jumped up into my throat and I stopped breathing for a moment. I’m sure my grip on the steering wheel left some dents. I almost lost control for a moment and dropped two wheels off the shoulder. The announcers’ deep voice went on as I recovered to asphalt.

“Nothing sinks in like a rolling stone on 66.6FM, Hell Radio!”

The smooth fingerings of “Gimmie Shelter” began. I discovered I was frowning as the reality of what was just said sank in. There is no 66 range on FM. I shelved the scant contemplation quickly as I recognized the old tune. The chorus of “Ooo’s” drifted in and I scanned my memories far back into my childhood when I’d first heard that haunting melody.

I remember an old record player a cousin had. The LP was spinning on it. As the years went by I never bought the album but the song stuck in my memory along with a few others from the same album. The Rolling Stones became instant icons to me back then.

Back to reality and I waited the song out. I wanted to hear the DJ again. Maybe he’d tell me where I was, or at the least what time it was. Every shadow beneath every little bush was way too short and had been for way too long.
