My wife likes to watch novelas. For those of you not in the know, that’s a Spanish soap opera. Well, she doesn’t like to watch all of them, just one in particular. It’s called La Madrastra, and unlike American soaps with a continuous plot, novelas are only slated to run about 6 months or so. La
Madrastra is in it’s final weeks, and I can’t help but feel a pang of sadness to see it go.

If you were to ask me what it was about, I would just repeat what my wife tells me is going on. Unlike my better half, I don’t speak Spanish… Just the choice words I’m not supposed to know, and the excellent choices in my favorite Mexican restaurant. No… not me, I prefer to make up my own plot as
I watch it. I used to think it revolved around this guys mustache, but he shaved it halfway during the show.

Usually, I sit with a book and occasionally look at the screen after a
slap to the face or someone cries (that happens a lot). It has had some educational value though, I originally decided to watch the show with my wife in the hopes that I would pick up some more Spanish, but all I ever learned was the expression “ESCUCHAME” which means “listen to me”(they say that a lot too).

All in all, it’s been OK, a little quiet time every day with the missus. So yeah, I guess I am kind of sad to see it go.
