The Fourth of July is just around the corner and I can almost taste the burgers and hot dogs being grilled in our backyard. I don't know what it is about the holiday that just screams for time outside, enjoying the weather and eating your weight in foods you probably shouldn't be eating in the first place.

But that's OK. Calories don't count on holidays, right?

Anyway, my family and I were talking the other day about Fourth of July decorations, traditions, etc. and we started discussing the cakes you see at almost every Independence Day party, dressed up like a flag with strawberries for the stripes, blueberries for the stars and white frosting.

And while that's always good -  you'll never see me turn down a piece - we thought we'd go another route this year. I've been surfing the Internet lately just looking for desserts that still give that patriotic feel, but do it in a slightly different way. I thought I'd list a couple of my findings here.

This Web site offers an Uncle Sam ice cream treat by flipping the ice cream cone upside down on a plate. Decorate with patriotic icing for his hat, add candy for the eyes and whipped cream for his beard and you've got a delicious dessert that hopefully won't melt away too quickly.

This Web site shows firework cupcakes. Each cake has a burst of color coming out of it, and when they're on display they resemble a fireworks show.

And here, we have a "pizza" made of cookie dough, blueberries and raspberries. Makes me hungry just looking at it ... but that could also be because it's almost dinnertime.

I hope these come in handy for somebody out there - I've never tried any of them, but I'd like to. Have a happy Fourth of July, everybody!
