As you can see by the upticking brown streak on this national poll chart, Rick Santorum has captured the hearts (because he can't appeal to minds) of a third of conservative Americans. But is he conservative in a literal sense? Sure, ol' Rick is the frothiest socially-conservative politician I can think of, but is he a governmental/fiscal conservative? Do his social views translate into smaller, leaner government or a larger, more invasive government? How would his foreign policy affect the size of government?
Could it be he's "conservative" only by way of the semantics that have disconnected words from their meanings, not unlike the shift in the meaning of "Santorum"? If death merchants disguised as pro-lifers are deemed conservative, is there any honor left in that title? I foresee that a President Santorum would overfill the annals of American History with the same disregard for our personal & economic liberties as George W. Bush. Let's review, shall we.
