Technically, businesses are not supposed to hire illegal immigrants, so those people are not what President Obama was talking about in healthfcare reform. President Obama was talking about Americans and those here legally.
The only thing that will happen is that businesses will keep paying under the table so there isn't anything on the books.
President Obama was still telling the truth. Illegal immigrants will still use ER rooms for emergencies and basic healthcare and the states will pick up the tab.

    September 10, 2009 at 11:15 p.m.

  • I just cannot buy into a federal program that is called deficit neutral. I would challenge anyone to find a single federal government program that is deficit neutral. Only thing I can think of that comes even close is the IRS under the Treasury Department.

Maybe President Obama is going to make history by being the first President to sign a deficit neutral social bill.

Also, I just cannot understand people that support selling from the wealthy to pay for the poor. At some point even the middleclass will be called wealthy. I am not saying all individuals that are called wealthy worked for their money. It just does not make sense to me to take income from Engineers, Inventors, Skilled Surgeons, writers, researchers, money lenders. Their skills can easily be exported.

  • After watching President Barack Obama’s address on healthcare I am convinced that he is the right man to lead America through these hard times.
Even those who speak out against him in anger today will come to respect him and support him with love in the future.
May God Bless America and may God Bless Barack Obama.

    September 10, 2009 at 10:44 p.m.

  • So then they are using double speak to get around the issue of covering illegals under the reform.

    Thanks for the post.

    September 10, 2009 at 8:10 p.m.

  • VBB, here is the direct language from the President's speech.

"Now, even if we provide these affordable options, there may be those-particularly the young and healthy-who still want to take the risk and go without coverage. There may still be companies that refuse to do right by their workers. The problem is, such irresponsible behavior costs all the rest of us money. If there are affordable options and people still don't sign up for health insurance, it means we pay for those people's expensive emergency room visits. If some businesses don't provide workers health care, it forces the rest of us to pick up the tab when their workers get sick, and gives those businesses an unfair advantage over their competitors. That's why under my plan, individuals will be required to carry basic health insurance-just as most states require you to carry auto insurance. Likewise, businesses will be required to either offer their workers health care, or chip in to help cover the cost of their workers."

This means that businesses which hire illegals will have to provide them with health insurance or help cover the cost of their care and individuals (legal or illegal) will be required to carry health insurance. This will drastically reduce the number of people utilizing the emergency room without insurance for free medical treatment (you will never be able to completely eradicate this problem) and that means we all benefit from reduced health care costs.

Sorry this post is so long but I wanted to quote the passage exactly.

  • Edpost: Wow! Somebody got a thesaurus for their birthday.

    September 10, 2009 at 7:45 p.m.

  • How do you figure since they are adamant about NOT covering illegals in the reform?

    September 10, 2009 at 7:44 p.m.

  • VBB: "We already are paying for the illegal aliens health care. How is that going to stop with this reform is my question?"

The President stated that one condition of the plan is that every person would have to apply for some form of healthcare, either employer provided, self purchased, or public-option if you could not afford to buy. This would mean that no one would go to an emergency room and have their bills written off to the taxpayer. The days of taxpayers covering the costs for uninsured illegals would come to an end.

The fuzzy math about reducing Medicare expense by $500 billion dollars in fraud and waste is still confusing to me. If the President was aware of this, it should have been the first action he took when he took office. I am beginning to believe this aspect of his plan is "smoke and mirrors".

    September 10, 2009 at 7:18 p.m.

  • WillieT: Couldn't help but notice that you capitalized "President Bush" and "Republican" but failed to capitalize "obama" or even correctly address hinm as "President Obama." I guess disrespect for the man and the office isn't limited to junior congreemenn.

  • "Adults aged 65 and older have the highest health care spending, averaging $8,776 per person."

"A small share of people accounts for a significant share of expenses in any year. In 2006, almost half of all health care spending was used to treat just 5 percent of the population"

So every single person under 65 in the nation, when added to the equation, only reduces the per person health care cost by $608 per year?

The last statement I posted from you verifies what I mentioned about the amount of per person health care costs are skewed. Thank you.

    September 10, 2009 at 6:59 p.m.

  • It's called instant gratification. Damn the consequences.

    September 10, 2009 at 6:58 p.m.

  • The future of Medicare is in trouble.
The future of Social Security is in trouble.
Rather than have the government try and start a healthcare program that nearly everyone realizes won't work as promised and will likely lead to trillions of dollars in deficits and substantial tax increases over the next several decades, why not first fix the existing Medicare and Social Security programs. That would be the responsible thing to do. Then at some point, and at a more leisurely pace, maybe they could look at healthcare reform that won't bankrupt our nation or lead us further down the path to socialism. I just don't get the all out mad rush?

    September 10, 2009 at 6:46 p.m.

  • And health care insurance reform will change these costs, how??

By providing free or subsidized insurance to 46 million more people?

By eliminating waste and inefficiency - like they can't do that now?

By providing coverage for mental health patients -this is the one that I'm sure the con artist can't wait to get ahold of.

By insuring 12 million illegal aliens - yeah that's right, they cannot be denied coverage because of the equal protection admendment to the Constitution.

And finally Obama's ten year budget shows Medicare and Medicaid increasing at 8% per year - all of this just does not compute?

    September 10, 2009 at 6:12 p.m.

  • The best part I liked about the speech is when Obama shut his mouth. The man is a perpetual liar. There were two bills that the democrats vetoed that would eliminate any health insurance coverage for illegal aliens.

He lies in such a way that any one that wants to debate him is the bad guy. He is the one covered with the muddy slime left over from crawling up from the dregs of the Chicago illegal activities groups in real estate and law. He wants everyone to lick his boots.

Have you not heard the speeches from the past two years that inspite of what he said last night, what he said he wanted to do to the medical and insurance industries as he addressed SECIU(SP) and other unions who will get to keep their insurance coverage no matter what.

The man is a filthy lying dog. A lying yellow dog.

    I also found this.

How Much Does the U.S. Spend on Health and How Has It Changed?............2 The U.S. spends about $7,400 per person on health care each year. Sixteen percent of the U.S. economy is devoted to health care. Health care spending is consuming an increasing share of economic activity over time and has exceeded economic growth in every recent decade. How Does U.S. Health Spending Compare with Other Countries?...................4 The U.S. spends substantially more on health care than other developed countries. As of 2006, health spending in the U.S. was about 90 percent higher than in many other industrialized countries. How Does Health Care Spending Vary by Person?.............................................5 A small share of people accounts for a significant share of expenses in any year. In 2006, almost half of all health care spending was used to treat just 5 percent of the population. Health care spending also varies by factors such as age and sex. Adults aged 65 and older have the highest health care spending, averaging $8,776 per person.

I did find this bit of info..I cannot verify the accuracy because I do not know anything about this group.

  • Mike,

I do not need to learn the issues, and most certainly not from you with you’re LEFT-WING base. Yes Democrats serve in the military I know a lot of them, but they don’t have you’re misguided thinking. I was a Democrat until Clinton, even voted for that moron, he was doing fine up until the point he couldn’t keep his pants on. Patriotic, I hope you do not mean someone like Nancy Pelosi??

You’re numbers do not add up over health care, we cannot afford it, I don’t care what you say, it’s plan simple math. You left-wingers keep digging, I think it all will come back bite you in the butt..

    September 10, 2009 at 5:29 p.m.

  • I have Aetna which costs me about $5,400 to me but I don't know what my former employer is paying...Many of my working friends are paying much more for their family plan or have been pushed into HSAs but I cannot prove their figures...I heard that health care costs a lot more in NJ than in Utah,so I think those numbers are just about right..During the many debates $12,000 was the number that was used and no one disputed those figures..I guess we have to agree to disagree.

    September 10, 2009 at 5:23 p.m.

  • I am not saying there numbers are wrong, as a nationwide average of Health Care COSTS per person, which is different than the Health Care Insurance costs.

The Health Care costs include every procedure received by every person in the nation divided by the total population. I contend it is a deceptive number, not everyone has a liver, heart, kidney, ect. transplant. Not everyone has a terminal illness that requires extended hospital stays and very expensive treatments and medications.( no offensive intended Cat.)

I am sure that the late Sen. Kennedy had the very best of care during his illness as Steve Jobs did before, during and after his liver transplant.

That is only two cases of many, of what I am sure are very high Health Care Costs that totaled more than a lot of people earn in income over a 20 year period, spread across every person in the nation.

That in itself skews the per person health care costs. IMO

My total health care costs the last 3 years?

    2 doctors visits @ 40.00= 80.00
2 generic prescriptions 36.00 , from my dentist not my doctor btw.

And that is it, pretty good for a 51 year old huh?

    September 10, 2009 at 4:54 p.m.

  • Following President Obama's speech on health care reform Wednesday night, the ABC News Medical Unit solicited comments from some of the country's leading health care policy experts.

"No one could hear President Obama's speech and fail to be convinced by the urgency of action on health reform," said Karen Davis, president of the Commonwealth Fund and a nationally recognized economist with a distinguished career in public policy and research. "He painted the need for reform in both human and economic terms…and made it clear that failure is not an option."

Obama "added his passion to balance the passion on the other side," said Robert Field, professor of health management and policy at Drexel University in Philadelphia. "He painted himself as a centrist, who differs from those on the left and the right. ... His position on the public plan sowed the seeds of compromise. He explained the position for it but clearly indicated that he will compromise."

My current plan, which I have had for about 14 months through greedy ole Humana, runs $2040 a year, and that is 100% of the premium, since I am self-employed.

    Co-pay $40, $5,000 deductible, I pay 20% after deductible and prescription benefits.

That is going to have to be taken up with immigration reform. This has nothing to do with healthcare reform.

  • Each of the nation's 5,700 hospitals must cut $2.6 million(avg. cost)in the next 10 years to meet Obama's health-care reform initiatives....Alan Aviles CEO of NYC Health and Hosp. said he found the savings of $4 million by just using two different kind of rubber gloves instead of the 20 they once used. The price of 132,000 cases it uses each year went from $58-$28 a case.... Savings like these will never be factored into the CBO numbers.

  • Mike,

I may not be spokes person for the American people, but I’m an American and damn proud of it, I respect the constitution and believe in it. Unlike your self who hides behind the constitution along with the rest of the Democratic Party, and refuses to defend it only to suit your self when you need it. I pay my taxes and I have served my country with honor. So the way I look at, I earned my opinion. The next time there is another 911 or a war you remember those who made the sacrifice so you can have the freedoms that you now enjoy…

    You have a nice evening.

The question is, how much is it going to cost if we do nothing? How many more will be dropped from their insurance policies and have to use taxpayers money to get treatment. The hospitals cannot turn anyone away, so those without insurance will still use public programs, or state tax money.
Now how do you think the states will earn more money to pay for indigent care? Yep, you got it. They will raise, and add to, the taxes they charge us for everything from food to gas, to highways, to property taxes, to ....everything.
With Presidents Obama's plan, more people will be buying their own insurance policies for less money through the exchange, so less people will be using public money. It may be rough when it starts up and until all the kinks are worked out, but in the long run, it will be way more cost effective for everyone.
Yur choices are to leave it like it is and watch our Country sink into oblivion, or try to do something about it now.

I don’t even know what” thick on words” means and is this not really that hard to see that you dislike this president…It doesn’t really matter.

First of all ,let’s get the players right…Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid don’t have anything to do with healthcare yet…It’s is more like Max Baucus, Henry Waxman, and Charles Rangel.

    The math
In 1993 health care costs came to $912 billion today it is $2.5 trillion….. Average cost per resident in 1993 was $3,468 today it $8168… back in 1993 it was 13.7 of GDP today it is 16% and rising….. In 1993 we had 37 million uninsured today that number is 46 million…. That’s not counting the 14,000 they will lose their insurance every day.

Believe it or not, you’re not the spokesman for the American people.

  • Mike,
You are very thick on words. You’re right about one thing I do not like this President, it’s because of where he comes from and what he represents.

My point is this nation cannot afford this type of health care change. Obama does not care if he bankrupts this country. The sad part of this, I cannot understand why the Democrats cannot see the physical numbers that are black and white, that it can’t be done, with out a tax increase. Reid and Pelosi are lying to the American people along with Obama. Come on Mike put the math to it, it will not work… The American people is not stupid, although the Democrats seem to think differently.

    September 10, 2009 at 3:28 p.m.

  • Suzy
I agree with what you said but it just shows that you are doing the research and not just taking a word of Congress or politicians in general.

I was listening to Rush Limbaugh, as I was driving home, trying to explain how the illegal immigrants would be added to this bill. The language specifically states that noncitizens would not be eligible for health insurance. Rush said Obama would make the 12 million illegal immigrants, citizens and then as citizens, they would be eligible for health insurance. ..The president has stated that no one would be turned away from the emergency room because it violates the Hippocratic Oath of doctors, prevents plagues, and it is the humane thing to do. But that is it exactly what the Republicans want to do; steer the conversation to something that will scare and play on the people fears and hates, rather than discuss meaningful legislation. It’s all they know and have left.

As I said the other day the Republicans will vote against the employer or employee mandates; so all of this is just a smokescreen for now; until we get to those issues. The Family Research Center will have a web cast tonight featuring the wing nuts of the Republican Party, telling the members, that this Health Care Reform will open the door for abortion on demand paid by the government.

What they don't know, they make up.

  • Those who have already made up their minds that it's a bad idea, only heard what they wanted to hear.
As to the illegal immigrant issue. He was telling the truth...as per FactCheck.
No illegal immigrant will be paid for by tax-payers money. That does not mean that employees cannot still carry them on their company-paid insurances if they so choose, and it does not mean that the illegal immigrants cannot "buy" their own policies, like some are doing now. I'm sure that they will be able to buy their own in the exchange.
It just means that the ones that have to go to the public "option", will not be illegal immigrants.

    September 10, 2009 at 2:46 p.m.

  • This is my Democratic plan. The President can go to he’s buddies at ACORN have those folks find the 19 million or so that do not have health insurance. Then set up five central location across the country so that those folks can register for free health care insurance.

Then there has to be conditions that have to be met. You can not receive any other entitlements until age of 70. That will include; no welfare, no Sec. 8 housing or assistance, no Social Security, no Medicaid. You must prove citizenship.

Then the President goes before congress one more time, ask for legislation, and put into law no more social programs for 50 years. Because the debt might be paid off which I doubt, but it’s a good start. Last but not least NO CAP AND TRADE, and cannot raise taxes during the course of that 50 years.

Then the President, can inform the 19 million you have FREE INSURANCE, of course another address to rest of the HARD working tax payer “ I have got what I wanted..”

I think that just about covers it…

Since I don't cut and paste columns from the Washington Times on Fox news, most of my blogs are just my thoughts. When I do quote,I give full credit to the author.

As I have said many times, the Democratic Party and Barack Obama campaigned on health care reform…. 69 million people voted for them, not providing health care reform would be political suicide… Republicans and Democrats alike want health care reform. The president should have called it insurance reform.
Come on ,lets be truthful, the president could not have said anything to please you last night or any other night for that matter.

You call them lies but I bet my bottom dollar that you cannot disprove them because this president is like any other politician; he wants to be reelected in 2012. No political candidate that messes with Social Security or Medicare stands a chance to get elected, that's why they call it the holy Grail.

Due to this skewing, CNN didn’t really play up the poll’s results on air, but they tried to do that on their CNN.com website.

President done nothing more but stand and bark at the republicans for 40+ minutes, sense they were a captive audience to his BS and the same lies that he has been telling all along.

The President will not stop until he has forced his health care plan down the American taxpayers, throat. Not one damn time did he ever mention the concerns of the American people, and I’m not talking about you can keep what you have. Did not explain how it would be paid for, then tried to convince the seniors they need not worry about Medicare even by cutting billions from that program another lie. So other words everyone will get free insurance. So I guess Washington DC will be getting a lot of flowers come election time, the President just give the Democratic party, a blue pill for their political suicide..

  • I guess that congressional decorum wasn’t in place in 2005 when the dems booed President Bush during his State of the Union Address. Sure glad they finally put that in the bylaws. Dam freshman congressman calling obama a liar right after he insinuated that a Republican lied about his death panel. Nope, I take that back, he didn’t insinuate, he said they lied. Gee, sounds kinda one-sided doesn’t it?

  • Your liberal leanings really come to the front with any quote from the likes of CNN. In reality the 112 speeches the President has made on this matter has in fact caused his ratings on this to drop below 50% nation wide.

In reference to lies, the fact as reported by a special Congressional brief to Congress on the health care proposals absolutely states that illegals will be included in the national health care package presented. So who is actually lying?
