No, not when the world stopped turning. Where were you when you first heard "Smells Like Teen Spirit?" That's the question popping up all over those wacky Internets thanks to an article by MTV on the infamous Nirvana baby.

Spencer Elden was just an infant when his parents dropped him into a pool where an awaiting photographer snapped one of the most recognized album covers of all time: Nirvana's "Nevermind." And in the News-To-Make-You-Feel-Ridiculously-Old category, little Spencer is now a 17-year-old high school student (Someone quick! Grab my prune juice and Metamucil!).

Spencer recently recreated that iconic photo by jumping into the pool again as his 17-year-old self (although this time he is wearing swim trunks, in case you were wondering...you little pervert you).

Spencer is just a regular kid (although he has some rather creepy pick-up lines thanks to his famous past as a baby) but an interesting side effect of the story is it's causing all of us old Gen X and Y-ers to reminisce about how wicked awesome life was back then in the early 90's.

I myself will never forget riding in my friend's older sister's car and hearing those first guitar riffs of "Smells Like Teen Spirit." I remember instantly falling in love and passionately arguing with my friends over what the lyrics actually were.

"I'm alive though?" or "A mosquito?"

A few times, it almost came to blows, people. (Note: I was wrong approximately 97 percent of the time).

And I also remember the chaos at school when we heard lead singer Kurt Cobain died (a death that had all of us crying into our flannel shirts and wiping snot on our wide-leg, torn up jeans).

So my question to you is, where were you when you discovered Nirvana? Or the band that defined your youth?

  • What a great album and group. I was living in santa fe,new mexico in the early 90's and heard Nirvana on the radio the first time. Then I saw the video(that was when MTV still showed videos). Being someone that has always loved going to concerts I almost drove down to Albuquerque the last time Nirvana played there. But for some reason I didn't go and thought -well they will be around for a long time so I will see them next tour. My mistake!

  • I first heard the song on a tape [very poor quality, I might add] made by one of my pen pals from Oregon. She'd gone to visit her cousin in Washington and recorded the song off the radio. She sent it to me cause she wanted to show how awesome she was to have heard a song before I did. Never mind the fact that I lived in Countrybumpkintown, Texas, and wouldn't even have cable until college cause it wasn't available in my area. Even through the godawful static, I heard a great song and thought here's a song to get me out of my hip-hop phase [I was into NWA]. By the time I visited my aunt in Austin and saw the video, I was in love with Kurt Cobain and owned every magazine with him in it that I could buy/swap/beg for. Something about those blue eyes and that dirty hair...
When he died, I first thought it was a hoax, until I heard Courtney Love reading his suicide note on air. I felt a part of my soul die cause here was a man who, in my humble teenage opinion, was pure genius. And like Billy, I loved all the songs. Still do.

  • I believe the first time I heard this song was at home.  My older sister loved watching MTV, so I saw the video on there.  As for the band that defined my youth, well, the metal kings.......SLAYER!  I first heard them through a friend, there was no stopping me after that.  I've been to numerous concerts and I know everything about Tom Araya, everything, it's scary.  Ofcourse Nirvana is pretty awesome too, any kind of rock/metal is good in my book.

  • I was in 8th grade when Nevermind came out. That was one of the albums that completely change the music I listened to. Before Nirvana, I was listening to the craptastic bubblegum hip-hop of the day (and yes, I mean Kid n' Play. But in my defense, I also listened to good stuff like De La Soul and pre-Baby Got Back Sir Mix-a-lot). Nirvana helped me transform from a loser nerd to a grungy loser nerd.

Funny thing, though. Even though I loved Nirvana, I hated "Smells Like Teen Spirit" because all the preppies liked it. All of us grungy loser nerds retreated deeper into the album, constantly rushing away from songs as they were released on the radio (and that was a lot of songs. They milked the crap out of that album).  It wasn't until about four or five years ago that I truly came to appreciate that song.
