Well, that didn't take long.

I've been at the first day of Memorial football practice for about 10 minutes and just saw my first kid throw-up his breakfast.

The Vipers are on the Memorial Stadium field right now going through drills. The team, coming off a 5-5 record last year, started at 8 a.m. and is scheduled to end at 1 p.m.

10:35 a.m.

Coach McCarter just told them they worked hard and that they're going to be getting better everyday.

10:47 a.m.

The Viper receivers are outside the field house going through catching drills. Machines are pumping footballs to some, while others are catching tennis balls. That drill is designed to help them watch in the ball.

11 a.m. Team is going over to the practice field to run. I'm going to shut down the computer. It's on fire here in the stands.

11:30 a.m. Vipers just finished a workout on the practice field. They broke the huddle and I thought Day 1 was over. According to the waterboys, another round of conditioning is still to follow.

12:30 p.m. Memorial finished the first day of practice 30 minutes earlier than scheduled. Mickey Finley said he was pleased with the effort the players displayed and that it was a good first day. Three more days of conditioning drills and then the pads go on.

  • or... a "die-hard", crazy, obsessed one who's just enjoying the year...

Never-the-less, you should work on your way of thinking and try saying to yourself, "Let's go out with a BANG" or how about (my personal favorite) "the Vipers have been working at this FOR YEARS, finally, they saved the BEST for last!"

Crap Wire, your doom and glooms got me down, you should cheer up and think POSITIVE!!!

Are you a Viper fan? Never-mind, that's a DUMB question...

  • Sorry Ringer im not fired up I just want you to have the facts straight. Still wondering who you are? Maybe your just a die heart Viper mom who is hanging on to something that is fading.

  • ...dang wire, ur gett'n all fired up. Didn't "they" tell you, I'm "superman!"

    {lol}

  • Ringer I said 20 years with high school football not just vipers. I dont know who you are from adam. Maybe you can shead some light on who you are. If thes guys have been conditioning for three years now they need to start over. Still cant break the .500 mark in their record.

  • Wes- Every player will not be interviewed for the paper, you and I both know that, all I was saying was: "you, should get to know each of the Vipers whether they make for a good story or not."
-Also, loved your article this morning about D-Zal and O.J. - I'm a huge fan of them both!

Wire- If you've been involved with football for 20 years then you ought to know the Vipers didn't start "conditioning" last week! They've been DEDICATED and "conditioning" for three years now... and you'd know my "dealings" with them.

  • Ringer I have been involved with high school football for over 20 years. Conditioning will not be done in one week. Nothing going to change til a kid dies in practice. Oh wait a kid did die a few years ago in practice. By the way I hear it every year about the vipers are bigger and better than last year and best group of kids in a long time. Same pile as every year. Until they have a winning season and go to the playoffs and win they will get a bad rap and the coaches will also. Best thing to happen to V.I.S.D split the schools and have a couple of class 3 A schools and maybe they can compete then. Ringer what is your resume dealing with the vipers booster club president?

    August 3, 2009 at 11:03 p.m.

  • Ringer - By your last statement, you're probably not going to like my story that will run in Tuesday's paper about the Vipers. It leads with Jared Dolezal and I talked with O.J. Hughes. Believe me, I know it takes an entire team to win and even to participate in sports. It's a long season, and I assure you, almost everyone on the team will be interviewed by me at some point in the season.

  • Wire??? "How many games have you coached?
Have you seen The Vipers this year and the overall "BUILD" of the team? They're stronger, faster, and solid. They didn't get that way because they "practice your schedule" they are fit- because each of them--- Endure the TEXAS/HEAT!!!

Those who "throw-up" and get overheated need a little more time to adjust- It's the FIRST day! Quit whining about ...football practice!

Wes- You should take a minute to meet each of The VIPERS and get to know "The TEAM"... (Media day is Aug. 13th)

    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO V I P E R S

    August 3, 2009 at 4:34 p.m.

  • No pain, no gain!
Frequent water breaks are ok. The heat is a killer. They have good coaches. I think this year will be better than the last. Extreme conditions can help to build an extremely efficient team. GO VIPERS!

    August 3, 2009 at 1:44 p.m.

  • They took every precaution possible. They took a lot of water breaks, were in the shade when they weren't working out and spent time inside where there was air conditioning. Next week the team will practice in the evening. There is no time that is going to be cool, but Finley and the staff are doing a great job of making sure the kids are safe.

    August 3, 2009 at 12:54 p.m.

  • Way to go keep them out in the mid day heat and let a few pass out. Who makes the schedule? Get out there at 7 a.m till 10 am and from 6 p.m to 8 p.m. so noone gets overheated.
