Either you haven't noticed or you've been relieved by the absense of my byline in the Advocate the past two weeks.

I've been enjoying a much-needed vacation away from Victoria, spending it in Austin, Dallas and Arkansas. The time away from work has been spent enjoying one of my best friend's wedding, time spent with family and friends that I haven't been able see in a while. It's been extremely relaxing and fun, but it's also coming to a rapid close.

I'll be back in the newsroom on Monday and in all honesty, I'm actually looking forward to it. Though it's been nice getting away from work, I've missed covering sports in the area.

Just two weeks from now, we'll get everything going again. I'm excited to see how the Vipers do this football season with Jared Dolezal at quarterback and O.J. Hughes at his true position of running back. It's going to be interesting to see how the Flyers do this season with second-year quarterback Kevin Daniels running the offense and Kamen Ruelas running through defenses. On the coaching front at St. Joseph, John Mares is only two wins from his head coaching win No. 100.

Volleyball at Memorial is now under Jamye Pauley who returns to her hometown to take over the program in its last year before the split. The night she got the job she told me she was jumping up and down in her home in Lockhart. I'm sure she still has the same excitement and it can only benefit the team.

There will be plenty to keep me busy and entertained in a couple of weeks, and I hope as I enter my third sports-calendar year in Victoria that I can give the coverage the justice it deserves.

See you in a couple of days, Victoria.

  • What Wes, a self-professed soccer junkie, didn't announce is that he's back and ready to cover futbol. I call it soccer, but he insists on calling it futbol. I think he's from England.

  • Wes- I enjoyd hearing you mention the Vipers in your post! They are going to suprise everyone this season and will go out with a "BANG!"
The dynamic talent of O.J. and Jarad, you mentioned, deserves to be talked about. However, what most people don't know is: they are supported by apporx. 18 other "STRONG" players, just as talented, just as fast in their given position. They've playd football with Jarad and O.J. -for almost a DECADE now- and understand their talent BEST!
Perhaps better than any coach, parent, or fan realizes. Mark my word- wait and see!

    Go VIPERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    P.S. where in Arkansas?
