The University of Houston-Victoria needed one win to capture the championship of the Association of Independent Institutions Baseball Championship on Saturday at Riverside Stadium and an automatic berth in the NAIA playoffs. The win wouldn't come easy. Lambuth University came out of the loser's bracket in the double-elimination tournament and claimed a 16-11 win over the Jaguars forcing a second game. The Eagles were up 1-0 and 2-1 in the second game until Zane Williams hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Jaguars the lead. UHV went on to win 6-2 and celebrated on their home field. The celebration wouldn't have been possible without the efforts of pitchers Ray Maldonado and Austin Hitt. Maldonado started after pitching 6 2/3 innings and throwing 118 pitches in Thursday night's 8-6 win over Lambuth. Maldonado gave up one run and five hits, while striking out five in five innings. Hitt pitched six innings and threw 93 pitches in Friday afternoon's 20-4 win over LSU-Alexandria. Hitt gave up one run, two hits, while striking out three in four innings. UHV played baseball for nearly six hours Sunday and didn't lead until it had played 15 2/3 innings. But the Jaguars were ahead when it counted and they get to play again.
