I recently moved to Victoria. And I do mean recently, as of last week I was in northeastern North Carolina, where I had yes, already used my heater for a couple of days. Gray clouds graced the sky more than the sun and my jacket had a permanent place as a wardrobe item.
I even had to start bringing out the long pants for runs, which I hate. But now that I'm back in Texas I don't have to worry so much about long pants or my warm-up jacket. Running shorts and a tank top can be my running attire, even in 53 degree mornings, though mostly likely I'm in a T-shirt.
However, yesterday I read an interesting story in the New York Times about training mentality in the winter. Basically, scientists have found that people's cardio decreases in the winter because of the cold, gray days, but performed more strength training.
I thought about it a little and it's true. Last winter in N.C., my cardio level decreased because the gray weather caused me to sleep in and I lacked the energy to force myself outside. However, now that I'm back in Texas, I'll be running year-round again. And that's what I'm most excited about.
