I've had a few close calls running. And I mean CLOSE!

I can't count the numerous times I've 'almost' been hit by a car. There have been mere inches, like yesterday with me and the black Dodge Ram truck at an intersection. Talk about an adrenaline rush.

Then again, I've also had cars swerve to hit me, when running on a shoulder, minding my own business. I jumped to the side, but the guy was joking with me and pulled back into his lane before he would have hit me. I didn't find it funny.

As a runner, I run on trails, sidewalks, shoulders, roads, grass, etc. I don't usually run on tracks, running in circles bores me. I realize that I'm a pedestrian among cars, but when you are training for a marathon, running on a treadmill for 4 hours isn't entertaining.

I don't plan on stopping my runs because of my chances of being hit. I am just smart about it. I don't cover myself in black (at least not at night). I keep my eyes and ears tuned into my environment, especially on the highway. And no matter what I run on lighted streets at night and early morning hours.

While, this doesn't promise I'll never be hit, it does lessen my chances. But may I make a suggest to all the drivers out there, please don't jokingly try to hit me, I don't find it funny at all, and watch out for runners like me at intersections. A major thank you from me and all the runners out there.

  • I agree we should as drivers watch out for runner, bikers. That said I have seen many times when bikers and runners are either not following the rules or have headphones on oblivious to their peril. If you bike or run on roads follow the rules they are there to protect all of us.
