Proponents of global warming might call it a sign of the times, but the federal government has launched a national drought portal. It provides a comprehensive look at drought conditions as they exist today and forecasts of where they're likely to develop.
The site just came online Nov. 1 and is full of colorful graphics. It's geared toward fire officials, emergency managers and the like, but it's easy enough to use that the general public should find it useful as well.
Victoria County's fire officials have already expressed their concern about the potential for wildfires, especially in light of the recent dry spell and the growth of vegetation from this summer's rains.
It appears that concern is justified. The U.S. Seasonal Drought Outlook through January indicates a drought is likely to develop in our area.
