I guess I’ve always taken for granted the humble rain gauge. But Texas A&M University posed a question about when the first rain gauge was used.
Are you ready for this? No one knows for sure.
“Ancient Chinese government records show that the Chou dynasty was interested in keeping rainfall measurements over 3,000 years ago,” said Brent McRoberts of Texas A&M. “We also know that there are records in India of recording rainfall about 400 B.C.”

Wow, that is really interesting. I wonder if the data they recorded can be of any use in weather models today.
