Image    If you missed the biggest and brightest full moon of 2008 when it appeared last month, then you’re in luck.
The event will repeat Saturday night and will be the biggest, brightest moon of 2009.  It will be 14-percent bigger in appearance and 30-percent brighter, according to NASA.
The best time to view the moon will be when it is near the eastern horizon about the same time the sun sets in the west. Moonrise for Victoria will be at 5:31 p.m.
The moon never gets bigger or smaller, but it gives the illusion of appearing larger as it is rising and setting. That illusion will be exaggerated Saturday when the moon is at its closest approach to the earth this year as it travels its elliptical orbit.
I heard from several people who weren’t disappointed they took the time to observe the last big moon.

  • without using the net for help.....i would say a lunatic was referenced to a moon altering behavior.  The 'blue" moon made me do it and drove me crazy with the magnetism of attraction.   lol.    I trhink also in the really old days the lunies where put in the nut house.

  • Cool tip, David. Thanks. Maybe all of us bloggers could meet for a stroll and howl at the moon. I'm there. :)

Here's a quiz. What's the origin of the word "lunatic"?

  • Fatboy and LBB: You'd be better off observing the moon without a telescope or binoculars. They limit your field of vision too much. Riverside Park and Saxet Lake Park offer an unobstructed view of the sky for those looking for something like that.
