I’m a little late on this one, but I’ve compiled my list of top weather stories for the Victoria area in 2008.
Certainly at the top of that list is the drought, which really began in late 2007 and spanned all of 2008. Victoria had 21.71 inches, making it the eighth driest year on record.
It hasn’t been that dry since 1988, when 15.91 inches fell. The driest year ever was 1917, which had 11.15 inches.
Related to that would be the wildfires that charred hundreds of acres, prompting burn bans off and on during the year.
Third on my list would be Hurricane Ike. While it made landfall on Sept. 13 near Galveston, there was a time it had a bead on Port O’Connor.
A mandatory evacuation was ordered for Victoria County, but rescinded the next day after it was apparent Ike would miss us. For weeks after Ike, storm debris from the Upper Texas and Louisiana coastlines was observed washing up along the Middle Texas Coast barrier islands.
Can you think of anything I missed?
