My wife has been reading books on a greater man than I thought his greatness was. I have started to picking them up and reading.

One good recommended. It is just a long book. Churchill, A life. By Martin Gilbert.

A complicated man, a great leader.

Image British Prime Minister Winston Churchill,

"You see these dictators on their pedestals, surrounded by the bayonets of their soldiers and the truncheons of their police. They are afraid of words and thoughts! Words spoken abroad, thoughts stirring at home, all the more powerful because they are forbidden. These terrify them. A little mouse – a little tiny mouse! – of thought appears in the room, and even the mightiest potentates are thrown into panic. ..."

"Some see private enterprise as a predatory target to be shot, others as a cow to be milked, but few are those who see it as a sturdy horse pulling the wagon."

"The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries."

"We contend that for a nation to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle." "You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life."

"Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy."

"The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter."

That's why we have a Republic.

  • The point is it's better to look up to somebody who is willing to stand up for their country rather than drive it into the ground.

  • "Conservative need to be careful of who they admire"

  • Yes he was a Great man. But to make him the Patron Saint of contemporary conservatism is a bit disingenuous. Churchill had to crawl to the chief villain of contemporary conservatism for what we call a hand up to empower people to well fight their own battles.

    Churchill to Roosevelt.
"What is the answer that I shall give in your name to this great man, the thrice-chosen head of a nation of 130,000,000? Here is the answer which I will give to President Roosevelt.

"Put your confidence in us. Give us your faith and your blessing, and under Providence all will be well. We shall not fail or falter. We shall not weaken or tire. Neither the sudden shock of battle nor the long-drawn trials of vigilance and exertion will wear us down. Give us the tools and we will finish the job."

  • Thanks, sandwichh, you included some of my favorite Churchill quotes.

  • Isn't it amazing. Churchill managed to (eventually) wake up Britain by bring their attention to what Hitler was doing and what his (Hitler)intentions were. It seems they had this "let's just get along" mentality that had to be shaken. They almost waited too long to do something about it, having their cities being bombed to smitherines by the Germans, and to the brink of defeat. My dad helped win that war, in the nose of a B-17. It was men of courage, like Churchill and my dad, for whom we all hold alot of gratitude. We could all be speaking German, and the Jews, and any other races or undesireable creeds (to Hitler) would have been wiped off the face of the Earth.
A fine posting to honor such a great man. Thanks.
