Convention workshops were plentiful this year and focused on helping journalists keep their heads afloat in a time where technology and digital toys are the new tools of storytelling.

NAHJ convention this year is a headlong dive into digital conversations and moving from print to multimedia production. I was fortunate enough to have my first convergence workshop with Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalists who worked with reporters in small groups to learn the basics of photography. The next workshop focused on getting the best sound for audio slide shows and podcasts.

The more and more I understand about this business, the more I’ve discovered we’re required to be a bunch of techies who tell stories. Despite the tools that have changed, from cutting and slicing film to flash drives and Soundslides, journalism remains what it has always been – telling great stories, examining the facts, seeking truth and reporting it.

The tools in our journalism work belts are changing dramatically but with a little training, patience and inspiration we will learn, evolve and adapt just as our founders before us.

In the words of one workshop presenter, “In times of change, learners inherit the earth while the learned are beautifully equipped for an earth that no longer exits.”

It’s a survival of the fittest situation for journalists and those with the skills to learn quickly and thoroughly will out live us all.
