What do you remember about the Good Old Days? One thing comes to mind (I'm sure there are many others) and that was the price of gas back in the 1950's. When new gas stations open up in town, I think... "wow"....now we might see gas selling for $1.85 for a few months... but that wasn't meant to be. In driving around town and to surrounding areas, it now seems to have found a permanent home at almost $3.00. Just got back from Weslaco and I noticed on the entire 200 miles drive that gas stations were proud of their $2.79. "GRANDPA TELL ME ABOUT THE GOOD OLE DAYS" meant that gas was OBSCENELY inexpensive in the 1950's and even if your "soaped up" vehicle gobbled ten miles to the gallon you could still fill the tank with a five spot or less!! Does anyone besides me remember gas being around .25 cents a gallon and a few times we had what was called a "Gas War" and it got down to .19 cent a gallon...Cars would line up for blocks waiting their turn at this "unpassable" offer. It got so bad, that gas stations had to put a limit of only 10 gallons at a time. Since most people owned more than one vehicle, they would rush home to get the other vehicle and stand in line for another hour to get these "gas war" prices. Does anyone remember people saying that gas would get to .50 cents a gallon? I do and thought that was never going to happen and probably laughed my "head off" if someone might have said...it might hit .95 cents one day-- NO WAY JOSE...WELL YES JOSE, the day has arrived and surpassed this prediction...
