Looking at ranging reporter J.R. Ortega's story on diabetes, appearing in today's Victoria Advocate, he and I got to thinking about diabetes. Is there enough diabetes awareness within the community? I headed out to IHOP to find out what people think.

“I don’t know. I think diabetes is something anybody can come down with and I think it’s definitely a serious ailment but you have the ability to stop it with diet and exercise. I don’t know if there’s a big need for community awareness. I’m not trying to downplay it because it’s serious, but I think of all of the diseases out there it’s one of the most avoidable.” – Rob Meinke, chemical plant operator, Victoria.

“No, people don’t know enough, and people don’t want to change. There are a lot of diabetics in this area.” – Dena Jobe, nurse, Victoria.

“Yes, I think so. The hospitals always have those health days and the doctors sometimes have those days where people can come in and get free check-ups.” – Christine Cortez, Victoria City-County Employee Credit Union Employee, Victoria.

“No, I think there should be more, because there are more people being affected by it every day and people need to know more about what to do to prevent it.” – Chancee Chandler, student, Victoria.
