So this is weird. The New York Times reports that thousands of red-winged blackbirds fell from the sky on New Years Eve in Beebe, Ark. Scientists are thinking fireworks disoriented the birds, causing them to fly into stuff and then, well, die. Either way, it's too bad Rod Serling isn't alive. This has the makings of a classic Twilight Zone episode written all over it.

And the plot thickens, as another batch of blackbirds dropped from the sky in Point Coupee Parrish, Louisiana. About 500 redwinged blackbirds bit the dust. The Christian Science Monitor points out that this has happened before with 16 incidents of large groups of blackbirds croaking in the past 30 years. Still, I think this could be aliens, or the fallibility of humanity or something else equally interesting and I'm awaitin' for a Rod Serling-type to really work this over.
