The fires are still ragingacross Texas, and that's pretty much the biggest news there is.

The fires are awful, and I don't think it's possible to see the pictures or smell the smoke and not feel for the people facing this disaster. It's kind of unimaginable that everything a person has can go up in smoke, literally. Until it does. Until you see the smoke from hundreds of homes floating in the air, moved by the 35 mph winds from up around Austin to here.

But still there are plenty of other things going on in the world, even if it does seem like our whole state (or at least the part of it that hadn't burned already) is on fire. In Somalia, thousands of people may die of starvation as the famine spreads.

Climate change in the world's bread basket has got people freaked out.

And, as always, the tidings from town around Fukushiima Daiichi are always pleasant.
