There's lots of things happening on the environmental news beat.

Here are a few stories you might find interesting:

There's a House bill out there that would basically gut two key environmental rules. As the President gets ready to start that incredibly dignified process of running for reelection, his advisers are stepping up and saying he will veto the bill, which puts off a pending upgrade in mercury standards and delays the EPA ruling to cut power plant emissions that blow across state lines.

Meanwhile, out on the West Coast, the shipping companies responsible for the Cosco Busan oil spill have agreed to pay $44.4 million. The 2007 spill polluted San Francisco bay killing thousands of birds and fish. The money is supposed to go toward restoring the habitat and reimbursing state and federal agencies that responded to the disaster.

Remember those Wild horse and burro sales that come through every year, giving you the chance to adopt an adorable wild horse or burro? Well, you really ought to think about it, because the director in charge of keeping the wild horse herd numbers down is facing a problem since the horses don't have any natural predators and there are way too many of them. The Bureau of Land Management is being told to cull 12,000 horses from the herd of 38,000.

So, yeah, if you've ever considered adopting a wild horse, maybe now is a good time. I don't know that they turn them into dog food the way they uses to (like in the Marilyn Monroe-Clark Gable film "The Misfits) but these are tight financial times, so, there's no telling what options are on or off the table.
