Most Mondays find me with a "list to do today," but I got a jump on the week by shopping, balancing checkbooks, and paying the last of the months bills on a Sunday. Hub's hunt for dove in Uvalde this weekend was a bust except for the high school camaraderie shared between rain showers. He and his buds did, however, go check out some waterfront on the Frio and Nueces. We will go out there in October.
Some areas received 8 inches of rain and that helps the watershed. A nephew called and said that our almost empty ponds on our lease are now overflowing. That's good. I get concerned with the cows and their babies. I never think they get enough to eat and am always sneaking protein pellets to them when the guys are roaming the ranch.
I don't know if anyone remembers "This is Your Life." I remember watching it as a kid. Today starts 6 months of a routine followed now for 28 years. Hub did give me fair warning when he took my oldest and me to the first family lease in Zapata, Texas. I was also told that hunting wasn't that important to him anymore. His buds would accuse him of sacrilege, now. Actions always speak louder than words. I knew that, but I'd found husband material, and wasn't about to rock the boat.
My oldest and his wife are going to attempt to bring blond beauty to the camp this weekend as it is the beginning of dove season. My son remembers my patient years as I trekked through the brush with him as he learned to really hit his targets. I was his spotter and most of the time the dog or he found his birds. I have been shooting for about 25 years now, and still haven't hit a bird. I am going back to using the kid's shotguns this weekend, but my best friend assures me that the answer is a Beretta over and under. Hub agrees and since it probably won't improve my aim, he will get yet another weapon to add to his arsenal. Amazing, what gets the hub's immediate attention.
As for me, I will enjoy sharing nature with yet another generation. Children enjoy the outdoors no matter where they are. Blondie will be ready for the wagon rides, and she'll get to drive the Bobcat, and pet the dogs, and not remember a thing a month from now. The memories will be mostly for me, and I will record every second. Cool Grannies do that, and then scrapbook it for the day they graduate from high school. This is your life, and thanks Blondie, for all of the precious memories.
