While many NBA fans will take the bait and declare the Boston Celtics the team to beat this season, I'm still holding on to some doubts. After all, the team is only 6-0 after Tuesday's win over Indiana and they haven't played the top teams in the league.
Kevin Garnett is looking strong on defense, and Ray Allen and Paul Pierce are putting up good offensive numbers but we can't read too deeply into the fast start. The Green-3 are all averaging over 20 points a game, but what is going to happen when they have to go up against Dallas or the Spurs.
What if KG goes down with injury or if the team starts to struggle with its shots. Where does the team go if it loses a couple of games in a row, and what happens if jealousy creeps in with one or two of the players.
What will happen is the Celtics will go down. And when they do, two of the Texas teams will be quietly standing by waiting to take things over.
Dallas (5-2) and San Antonio are still my top two teams in basketball. The Spurs are about as boring as my Saturday nights, but they are looking as solid as ever. Tim Duncan continues to be unstoppable in slow motion, while Tony Parker and Ginobili make the team at least bearable with a little flare.
I would take those three over the Celtics almost any day. Dallas will also be able to beat Boston in a series if they come up against each other. Josh Howard continues to get better and Nowitzki is always capable of catching fire and dismantling any team.
One thing the Celtics have over both teams is excitement. We'll just have to wait to see if they have the staying power.
