WACO – Kevin Daniels ran for a touchdown, threw two and kicked a field goal. But after the game was over, Daniels and the St. Joseph Flyers were forced to watch Dallas Christian celebrate.

The Chargers claimed a 38-24 TAPPS Division II regional win over the Flyers on Saturday at Waco ISD Stadium, ending St. Joseph’s season at 8-4.

“They were just an overall great football team,” said Daniels of Dallas Christian (11-0). “They had size, quickness. There’s a reason they’re the No. 1 team in the state, but I think we showed that we are a great football team too.”

Daniels finished the game with 223 yards on a 19-for-30 passing performance, ran for 99 yards and was a part of every St. Joseph score.

“Kevin is a leader and has gotten better every game for us,” St. Joseph head coach John Mares said. “He showed great things here, and he showed that great things are in his future.”

Dallas Christian jumped out to an early lead on a 12-yard touchdown run from Blake Rudd and would go into halftime with a 17-7 lead. St. Joseph’s first half touchdown came on a 17-yard touchdown run by Daniels, while Tyler Sutton took in a 19-yard pass for a score from Charger quarterback Christian Morrisey.

St. Joseph would fall behind 24-7 on the first play of the second half as Skye Dawson took the kickoff back 95 yards for a score.

Down, but not out, the Flyers would score 17 unanswered points to even the game at 24.

St. Joseph responded to the kickoff return with a 19-yard connection from Daniels to Luke Dornak to bring the score to 24-14 in favor of the Chargers. Dornak finished the game with four catches, while Don Paul Dubose led the team with six catches.

Kamen Ruelas, who was held to 25 yards on 15 carries, scored from 26 yards out on a reception and Daniels’ field goal tied the game going into the fourth.

St. Joseph finished the game with 366 total yards, including yards from five different receivers. Dubose caught six passes for 35 yards, while Dornak and John Villafranca each had 49 yards receiving. Dion Ruiz caught two big passes for 42 yards, while Ruelas came out of the backfield to catch three passes for 52 yards.

“We did a good job of executing all of our plays tonight,” said Daniels whose only miscues were two interceptions. “We came out to play with a sense of urgency. To play that well against a team like that says something about this team.”

The Chargers gained 244 yards of offense, and had one fumble that was recovered by St. Joseph’s Spencer Starkey. Brandon Durham led the Chargers with 108 yards rushing, while Morrisey threw for 49 yards on five completions.

Dallas Christian’s Caleb Withrow came back from an early injury to score on a 36-yard run, while Dawson completed the Chargers scoring with a 34-yard touchdown reception.

“Our kids never said it was over to themselves,” Mares said. “These kids left it all on the field. That’s all we ask from them and that’s what they gave us. We are leaving here proud of our team.”
