Even the most prolific writers must sometimes have times on a given day when they just can't get started.

I know I do. From my book of poetry, let me share this:

SOMETIMES THE WORDS WON'T FLOW

Waiting. Waiting for an inspiration.

Knowing. Knowing there are thoughts, unspoken words bottled inside. They can't escape. Maybe they've been bottled too long.

Undiscovered fermentations. Sweet wine waiting to be poured. Are there corks of caution? Of uncertainty? Uncertainty over where the wine will spill, if it pours at all?

What vintage?

  • Perhaps, one sip of that wine will help the words come tumbling out and spill over your first page. If it has been uncorked for a short bit, it is good to let it breathe. Swish it in your mouth (or in this case on the paper).
When I have this problem, I would just write something (anything) about whatever it is that I am trying to say. It could be the central part of the the story I want to tell or the ending. Sometimes, the other stuff will flesh it out. There are times when I get back to it the day after and delete it because I've thought of a better way to tell the story.
Lucky you. Piecing together a timeline of events would be very interesting to me. Your dedication will prevail. Peace.
