I remember talking to a New York literary agent about the story of the Butts murders (www.webbsleuths.org)  and him asking me, "What makes this story different from any other trailer trash murder?"

I was angered at first, especially at the use of the term "trailer trash," but the more I thought about his comment, the more I realized what he was trying to tell me.

Why does this story stand out among all the hundreds of other true crime/murder stories that are written every year?

That will not only need to be evident in my writing, but in my sales pitch when I try to convince an agent to take on the project.

Why indeed?
