Back to my roots

I have had the opportunity in the last few weeks to return to my writing roots -- sports.

With us a staffer short in the Sports department, I've covered three high school football games in the last few weeks. It had been 10 years since I had even been to a game, something i used to do on a regular basis back in Cass County where I followed the Atlanta Rabbits, Linden-Kildare Tigers and Queen City Bulldogs.

I actually began my writing "career" in sports, on my high school newspaper. In college I worked in the Sports Information Office at Auburn University and then spent two years in Sports Information in the Southeastern Conference Commissioners Office in Birmingham.

When I moved to Atlanta (Texas), it was to be the sports editor at the bi-weekly paper. I even won an award for a sports column I wrote there. When I began my own paper, of course sports was a high priority.

I enjoyed going back, at least temporarily. The game I covered between Sacred Heart and St. Paul was as good and exciting as I can remember seeing.
