Even as I am optimistic about a potential agent's enthusiastic remarks about the sample chapters she read, the waiting is excrutiating.

I have learned over the years not to get too high over what I call "nibbles" or too low over rejections, but I really thought this one might come through.

As I wait, I write. My goal is to have everything completed except the chapter about the trial by the time the trial starts the first week of October. Of course, I will need to do some additional research and catching up with some of the people involved in the case.

For those of you who haven't kept up, here's the book: a triple homicide in East Texas in 1992, a mother and her two young daughters. One man arrested, the son of a deputy sheriff, but never indicted. New DNA evidence 15 years later led to his indictment. I was a reporter in the town when it happened and have covered the case since day one. The cast of characters involved in the case are "stranger than fiction," as the saying goes.

Stay tuned.
