I am way off topic this morning, wait, let me fix that. I am still working on the book. The murder suspect pled guilty to killing the mother but not the kids. I am still writing. Stay tuned.

Now, back off topic.....OK, so I'm sitting in this bakery, see. A good bakery (www.halepaskas.com) for those of you not in this area. And one of the owners, the wife, comes over, hand outstretched, two desserts on a napkin. "You like fudge?" she asked. Now that's one question I have never been asked nor expected to be asked. That's like asking...g if I like...well, a lot of things. Not sure what look I had on my face, but I must have paused a beat or two as she held out the fudge. "Sure!" I finally answered and took the bounty. "It's grandma's recipe," she added. Melt in the mouth good, my friends. It got even better! I went to the counter to get something to drink, and lo and behold....FREE SAMPLES of DIVINITY! I have hit the mother lode of sweets! There goes the diet! Hello holidays!

  • My grandmother and I stop in to Halepaska's when in Victoria shopping every now and then. We went just this last Thursday, and I have never received bad service there until that day. The two (very young) girls behind the counter were actually rude to my 84-year old grandmother and didn't have patience with her when she couldn't hear them (she has hearing aids and can hear quite well with them if a person is speaking normally - these girls were sullen and mumbling and didn't even look her or myself in the eye when speaking).

It is sad to say, but I will definitely think twice before going there again. The pastries are always excellent; in fact, I bought my grandmother's last birthday cake there and it was just as I ordered and delicious. But I was so put off by these little girls that I am not sure I ever want to spend any money there again. I would have complained to the manager, but it appeared nobody else was there to watch over these girls, and I sure wasn't going to ask them to fetch the manager; I had enough interaction with them already.

Will I return to Halepaska's (this was the one on corner of the loop & John Stockbauer)? I doubt it.

  • Halepaskas is wonderful. My grandmother use to make divinity and taught me, however, she taught me in west Texas and when I make it here the humidity makes it sticky. Sooooooo I will swing by for a little piece of heaven and remember my grandmother and the smell of her kitchen at Christmas. Thanks for sharing.
