Sunday is my birthday.

I've never really given myself a gift on the occasion that I can recall, but this year is different. I decided to give myself the gift of health.

After my doctor's recommendation two -- or was it three or four -- years ago, I am having a colorectal cancer screening -- .better known as a colonoscopy. It's something he and other doctors recommend for all men 50 and over.

So on Sunday, my birthday, instead of cake and punch I'll be celebrating with clear liquids and broth in preparation for Monday's procedure.

I think I'm dreading the day of not eating and taking laxative after laxative more than the actual procedure during which I'll be unconscious and probably dreaming of cheeseburgers and pizza.

But, I know it's something I need to do.

According to the literature, among cancers that effect both men and women colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of death. The pamphlet also says that a screening could help avoid up to 60 percent of those deaths.

So, as unpleasant as Sunday and Monday are going to be, it could save my life.

And since I've been married less than 18 months, have a job I enjoy, and am working on a second true crime book, that life is something I want to stick around for as long as possible.

Happy birthday to me!
