By the time you read this, I will be in Austin taking some much needed time off. I love and enjoy my job, but sometimes it can be hectic and busy, but I think that’s what I love about this job the most – it keeps me on my feet. Well, for starters this weekend is my sister’s wedding and I am the maid of honor, oh and my birthday is today, August 26.

I always imagined that this year would be a bit different. In early January I told myself I was going to take an eight day trip to Europe, but of course there would be no way I could because of work. I also thought locally and thought about taking a few days to relax at some beach. But it didn’t work out that way. Instead I will be celebrating my sister’s wedding and I can’t imagine being anywhere else than by her side.

I have been feeling a bit emotional as the day is approaching, why you ask? She’s my baby sister, my little pooh. Not to mention, as I write this, I still do not have the maid of honor speech ready. I get paid to write, I get paid to print articles in a newspaper that everyone reads yet I haven’t come up with a speech?

Lily is my baby sister and now she is going to walk down that aisle on Saturday and off to share the rest of her life with her soul mate. I can’t imagine what I will be feeling when she walks up to him and he lifts her veil. Happiness of course, but I can’t help but realize she is all grown up. We spent many a day laughing and joking as kids and we have been there for each other through life’s happy times and sad times.

So on Saturday night, I will be making sure her veil is in place, her dress is flowing perfectly and that her smile stays in place – from ear to ear.

Maybe I don’t need a Europe vacation or a weekend trip to the beach, maybe the greatest birthday gift this editor can ever ask for is being a witness to her pooh’s wedding celebration. Yes, that is the best gift to cherish for life. What has been your most cherished day? E-mail me aacosta@vicad.com
