It was a cold and windy morning…but the local media gathered together and helped out the Boys and Girls Club! When Kevin Anderson and I discussed how to help the Club, I knew we had to do something never done before. It had to be different and outrageous and well, it was!
All three media outlets in Matagorda gathered, made the announcement and quickly got to work. All with one purpose in mind – to help the new Boys and Girls Club get their wish list filled.
So the Matagorda Advocate, The Bay City Tribune and Happy Radio 92.5 used the power of the press and got to work.
I am very proud of the work we did, all three of us worked hard to get the news out about the fundraiser to the community and yes, as a journalist, I can admit that I am always out looking for the story that’s going to be on my front page. And yes, in getting that breaking news story, per say, I want to be the first! I can’t help it; I am a reporter at heart. I do admit I am a bit competitive when it comes to the world of news. But I knew that in order to help the Club, we had to let that reporting “guard” down and unite as one.
After weeks of planning, Tuesday was upon us. The morning was cold, windy and grey and I was a little reluctant about whether or not people would show up to help out. And oh was I wrong. Within the first hour several check donations came in and people began to drop off office supplies, office furniture and even delivered packs of hot chocolate – it was just great to see that people were taking a few minutes off their busy schedule to stop and say hi and to drop off a donation! I had even forgotten that I had been standing under that tent for five hours.
But there was a moment during the fundraiser that stood out the most. After hours of cold weather, the sun came out. It was a beautiful sight to see. For me, it was very emotional – it meant that everything that we did and planned for was worth every minute.
Overall I am very proud to say that I took part in this great event. We had many laughs, many close calls with the wind and the tent and most importantly a sense of satisfaction that we helped out just a little bit.
I personally would like to thank the Boys and Girls Club for letting a bunch of people with notepads, cameras and microphones run around organizing a fundraiser for you. I wish we could do more!
I am also very thankful to the people of Main Street Coffee Bar for giving us all that great coffee. It kept us all very warm.
And let’s not forget Mayor Mark Bricker who also stood with us supporting the club. He stood out there with us, waved at passing cars and helped carry some of the donations. I have to say, that curbside idea really worked well.
One last note - I am very proud and happy to say that I am part of a medium that united us all to do this fundraiser. Thank you to Happy Radio KKHAFM 92.5 and The Bay City Tribune for agreeing to this fundraiser. It was fun to be in the same room with all of you that didn’t involve a press conference or event to cover. Until our next fundraiser – game on!
